The Year of the Scarf!

|
Do you ever get romanced by yarn in the yarn shops? Do you ever decide to knit what you see someone else knitting? Do you ever get a good idea for a certain someone, and you won't stop until you've figured out the perfect yarn, and of course wound up all the yarn? Do you ever get sidetracked with projects - knit for baby, knit yourself a sweater, knit a scarf as a gift, knit socks like everyone else -- all at the same time? WELL, that my friends is what always happens to me. I'm here to tell you, that before you know it, you have way to many things to keep track of and you get nothing finished. This Christmas I was so bummed out that I hadn't finished a scarf for one of my best friends, that it truly caused me to stop and take inventory. I thought I had some 14 scarves on needles, only to learn that in all honesty, rounding them all up - I had 28 already started and in various forms of finishedness. It sort of disgusted me, and I proclaimed that I would take this year, and knit them all to their finished state. I am in the process of putting together a countdown clock, and will only knit on scarves until they are all finished. Can I do it? Well I am starting this year off with a section here on the projects page called "The Year of the Scarf". Look for updates on this endeavor and tune into our Facebook page for updates too~ |
Anasuya comes to us from Berkley, California. She has knit the Irish Hiking Scarf, from Hello Yarn. The yarn she used is Cascade Yarns Rustic. That is a gorgeous shade of blue - so saturated, beautiful. Thank you Anasuya for sharing your work.
This is a scarf that my sons' girlfriend Hillary crocheted for me. It was my Christmas present. I really like the ribbon idea. Thank you Hillary - it's very warm!

Here's Chris, another Wednesday Night Knitter. She has knit the Eternity Scarf by Sarah Dimond, the Plucky Knitter. The yarn used - can anyone say YUMMY? It's the merino-cashmere-nylon blend worsted yarn of the Plucky Knitter. The color is called 'Piece of my Heart'. As you can see, there are two ways to wear this scarf; actually three as you could wear it up over your head as well. The yarn was very deep and rich in color and rather hard to photograph. Chris used two skeins for this - and it's perfection in knitting. Nice job Chris, I LOVE IT!
Laura lives on Bainbridge Island, in the state of Washington, and she knit her Mom 'My So Called Scarf' by Allison Isaacs. The yarn you see is Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Chunky and Laura's LYS is Churchmouse Yarns & Teas, also of Bainbridge Island Washington. thank you Laura for sharing your work. The 'My So Called Scarf' is also one of my 28 scarves that WILL get finished this year.
Sheila is a resident of St. George, Utah. She has knit the Ladder Scarf by Chris Bylsma. The yarn that Sheila used on this project is from Crystal Palace, and it's a yarn called Glam. you can read more on Sheila, from her blog. Love the purple - very pretty!
My friend Melissa, is another Wednesday night knitter that I knit with every week. She has made the Building Block Scarf by Sarah Hoadley. Melissa used Cascade Yarns 220 Wool. Melissa knit a matching hat to go with, using Jared Flood's Turn A Square pattern. The pattern comes from the Interweave Knits magazine's holiday 2009 issue, Holiday Gifts. The magazine is still available through WEBS - America's Yarn Store, and they have also put kits together using their Valley brand yarn Sugarloaf. Very nice Melissa - thank you for emailing in your photo, and I'll see you on Wednesday!

Here is Erica, a student from Orange County, California wearing a scarf she knit using Fresh From the Cauldron Silk Sock. The pattern is called Lace Ribbon Scarf by Veronik Avery. So pretty! The colorway on this scarf is called Bella Swan. Nice work Erica, and good luck in school~
Colleen is from Jackson, Wyoming, and she has knit the Drop Stitch Scarf using Manos Silk Blend. This worked up very nice, I even like how you did the fringe! Colleen's LYS is Knit On Pearl, also in Jackson. Thank you Colleen for participating.
Elsa lives in my neck of the woods, over in Lake Forest Park, here in Washington state. She knit the Baktus scarf by Strikkelise. This scarf sort of reminds me of the Daybreak, but Elsa did add the ruffles on her own, and I love them. Elsa used Colinette Jitterbug for her scarf and her LYS is Main Street Yarn in Mill Creak, Washington. Nice work Elsa and thank you so much for sharing.
Hilary lives in Bloomington, Illinois, and she knit the Daybreak scarf by Stephen West. Hilary used two different yarns for this, Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock in the mediumweight and Wisdom Yarns Poems Sock. it's interesting and different. Very nice Hilary, thanks for participating!
Rosa comes to us from Brooklyn, New York, and she knit Jared Flood's Noro Striped Scarf, BUT, she didn't use Noro yarn, she used Wisdom Yarns Poem. We couldn't have a scarf section without Jared's infamous scarf right? I think it's really pretty and I love the colors. I'll bet you love wearing it, and people comment all the time. I have two of these on needles that WILL be done this year. Nice work Rosa, it looks perfect! Oh, by the way, if you were wondering, Rosa chose colorway 553 in the Poem~
Lynn, THE FINISHER, is at it again. Look at this.....isn't it beautiful - it has a Victorian look about it. Lynn started out making Susy's Reading Mitts by Janelle Masters, and then fashioned a scarf to match. The yarn that Lynn used for the set was Cascade's Cloud 9 in the ivory. I love it, so soft - BEAUTIMUS!!

Here is a scarf knit by Kim from Justin, Texas. The pattern is one she got from Michael's, called Cabled Scarf with Pockets. Kim used Prime Alpaca, some yarn she picked up at Yarn Heaven in Arlington, Texas. It's really nice Kim, and you'd never know that you taught yourself to knit cables on this scarf - nice work, and thanks for sharing with us.
Yvonne is another friend from my Wednesday night knitting group. She has knit the Clapotis using Louisa Harding's Kimono Angora yarn. It's really pretty, and she said it was fun to make. The angora hung up the yarn a tad, but she liked the process. It's pretty Yvonne~

Kim is a gal from my Wednesday night knitting group. She knit this beautiful white scarf that our friend Patrece is modeling. The pattern is by Lily Chin, and is called "Cabled Wrap". The yarn Kim used is a mohair/silk blend but she didn't remember the specifics. It's reminds me of an angel. Thank you Kim for sharing, and thanks Patrece for modeling.

Denise comes to us from Floyds Knobs, Indiana. I have never seen this scarf before.....it's called Just Enough Ruffles by Laura Chau. And April is the perfect model, what a cute kitty! Denise used Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran for this scarf. I have knit with that yarn before, and it's one of my favorites. Thank you Denise, Laura & April for participating!
This scarf is the scarf that launched our KAL in my Wednesday night knitting group. Lynn THE FINISHER Terry knit the Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf, a Churchmouse pattern using, of course, Koigu. I love the colors in this scarf, it makes me think of fall. Nice work as usual Lynn. You can follow our KAL on Facebook!

Hilary of Bloomington, Illinois knit this beautiful Branching Out scarf by Susan Lawrence. Pink is my favorite color!! The Yarn that Hilary used is from Berroco, Love It. The photograph is to pretty with the flowers, nice work Hilary, and nice photography too. Thank for sharing your work.
Ellen in Ohio, knit the One Row Handspun Scarf by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. The yarn that Ellen used is Saffron Dyeworks Diva Sport, a merino/cashmere/nylon 3 ply heavy sport yarn. She cleverly designed a hat to go with. it's always intersting to see the way the yarns knit up differntly depending upon the cast on number. Nice work Ellen - the one Row Handspun Scarf is one of 28 scarves on my list to finish. Thanks for participating.
I have just finished my first scarf. One down, 27 to go. This scarf is a scarf that I saw knit up in the Allyn Knit Shop in Allyn, Washington. They used blue/green for the novelty yarn, and I already had the silver/gold combo in my stash so I just switched it up. I originally started the scarf for my sister in law Marie. Now, I'll be ready next Christmas with the scarf. It feels good to have a one on the tote board. The yarns I used were Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Dk in black, and di.ve' Scaletta in the gold/silver combo. It's hard to tell in black, but it's a basket weave pattern.

Here is Jan wearing a Christmas gift that my friend Erin made for her. The pattern is Loop De Loop Boa, a pattern from the Churchmouse Yarns and Teas, knit with yarn purchased from Alamitos Bay Yarn Company (our spotlight). There are three yarns used in the boa: Filatura Di Crosa Ricciolo, Alchemy Silken Straw and Habu kasumi. You look great Jan, and thanks for sharing Erin, of Long Beach California~

Here I am wearing a scarf that my friend Lynn knit for me. She is known in my circle of friends as "THE FINISHER". We are all a little envious of her ability to plow through a project in swift time. This scarf is the Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf only knit with an alpaca/angora blend yarn called Indulgence by Cascade Yarns. It's yummy and it has my favorite color in it 'pink'. You can acquire the pattern for this scarf at the Churchmouse Yarns & Teas, on Bainbridge Island in Washington state. They would be happy to mail you a copy of the pattern, and I'm not sure of the exact cost of the pattern.
